Information about Gay Pride in North America

Though LGBTI rights are still being fought for, a lot of progress has been made over the last decade. This means that even though the struggle is far from over, LGBTI people still have a lot to celebrate. What started as small, often intense, counter-culture rallies, gay pride events have morphed into huge celebratory parties. These events happen throughout North America but the following 5 are especially noteworthy.

Boston, Massachusetts, USA: As the birthplace of same-sex marriage in the United States, Boston rightly makes a big deal out of gay pride. A well-attended pride parade with numerous local leaders culminates in street fairs around the city hall. The city's large student population provides for a good mix of people from the younger generations and there are many well-established lesbian events in addition to those for men.

New York City, New York, USA: The United States's largest city unsurprisingly has the largest pride parade in the country. Gay and lesbian Americans from all over the world head to NYC each June to partake in the festivities. Events are often spread out over a whole week with the main parties happening on the weekend. The terrific museums, shopping, and cultural highlights the city offers are just the icing on the cake for visitors.

Los Angeles, California, USA: As the main metropolis of the west coast, Los Angeles serves up a pride parade to rival that of NYC. California is one of the friendliest states for LGBTI folks in the country so it makes sense that her largest city makes a big deal out of the event. The weather is usually great for spending a lot of time outside so locals can often be spotted in flirty, summertime fashions.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Canada's largest city is the epicenter for gay pride events in the country. Gay Canadians come from far beyond the province's borders to celebrate. The city boasts a large parade in addition to numerous nighttime events; the typical Canadian friendliness is, of course, complimentary.

Mexico City, Mexico: The biggest city in North America has pride events befitting its status. Mexico City is home to one of the Spanish-speaking world's largest pride events with people coming from near and far to celebrate. Affordable hotels, fantastic food, and a great arts scene make the city especially attractive to gay and lesbian travelers even after the pride events have passed.
